I was on the call for a while but had to leave before the discussion related to credentialing of DSP's as an answer to the workforce crisis.
I do not disagree with the researchers that credentialing is good a long term goal, but there is a flaw in that the workforce does not see it or know of it as a career. The comparisons they make are established trades that are well known and accepted - electricians and plumbers have been a trade for decades, and there is none for DSPs at this time. Because someone says it, does not make it so in the applicant pool. There has to be more of a concerted push by the industry to educate the public, to partner with educational institutions and government to show potential employees that it is a path worth pursuing, because if it is not introduced at that level, you are getting who is left in the job pools by default.

This is the same issues faced by the dental and medical professions when you look at dental and medical assistants. The demand was there and then the programs had to come into being so that you could credential and license and the educators partnered to produce the population. The pipeline in and sustainability starts there, and the credentialing signals the change. Needless to say, that you need runway to get that to work with a lead time of years needed to get everyone up to speed. If you jump too fast into the payment and credentialing spiral, you end up in a deeper crisis because of timing. It is reminiscent of the issues with our 60 hour training and the difficulties of pushing people through it.

I think that a first concrete step in my mind is to partner with government entity such as the Ohio Department of Education and public institutions such as Columbus State and also the various vocational education centers to create a DSP pathway. In also moving to vocational training, you push the pipeline back further to a younger and possibly older group (2nd career for retirees) to fulfill the needs of the providers.

I think this is a place where OPRA and the new State Director need to take a leadership role to begin to create the public awareness and dialog with educators and state organizations, such as Job and Family Services, to create that pool. I say job and family services because it is a way of helping those that are not employed to find a new career, assist them with job readiness, and get them ready to pass the intensive job and drug backgrounds needed to work in the field.
