Re: GED waiver request Mark Schlater 30 Jul 2017 17:47 UTC

I could not agree more- each Sunday I visit a local nursing home to see my wife's parents- guess what, they are extremely short staffed as well. However, they have great support and help from a local High School. Those students are involved in activities, assist in cleaning rooms, help with meals or just there it have dialog and improving overall services to individuals living in the home. They don't pass meds or do not do any personal hygiene. The STNA really appreciate their assistance.

I think High School students, and individuals who don't have a GED have a place in this industry. Some of those High School student I assume will continue to work in the field after graduation.

I am not trying to water down the professionalism of DSP's, but there are a lot of High School students that have a lot to offer.

The average person we support has at least 4 chronic health problems and receives 3-7 medications daily. Many also require frequent blood sugar or blood pressure checks. So maybe competency tests instead of GED or diploma, because those credentials don't necessarily guarantee a literate staff person.
