We do not discourage the people we serve from giving appropriate gifts, if they initiate the giving. They make cards, plastic bead jewelry, baked goods, etc. Staff often assist them in making gifts to give to friends, family and if they choose, other staff. Maybe even purchase a jarred $1 candle from the dollar store. Giving to others is a source of joy and personal pride. We don’t want to deny that, we just want to channel it.

It has only happened a couple of times but we do have a policy that if someone wants to give something of any value, over a dollar or two, it must go through administration. This way someone in authority determines if it was a gift given willingly, without encouragement and without creating any economic difficulty for the individual.

They call them family members, friends, etc. This is confusing because we all give gifts to family members and friends. So the one day a year they want to buy their family members/friends they cannot because on this day they are a client of services. It sure what the solution is, but the message is confusing.

Many of the ethical guidelines for some of the licensed professionals also prohibit gifts from being accepted. If a family wants to provide a meal (for example pizza) - that is permitted - provided that all employees working at the specific location are included. I can send the specific language tomorrow when I get to the office.

My understanding is that they cannot take the gifts... if anyone has anything wrote up or has any training on how to say no to these appropriately, I would appreciate it :)
