Yes, we inform employees that they are hired conditionally until they are approved by the consumer. During their “shadowing’ or initial training at the site, the consumer(s) and the site manager who they shadow with, have an opportunity
to decline the employee as not a good fit. If so, we look for another site for the employee. We usually find another place where they are accepted, but not always. We warn new staff that if they go in and do things like sit on their phone or don’t try to
develop a relationship with the consumer, the consumer will decline them. We had one person declined because she was scared of the cat and visibly reacted. The consumer said, “Cant love my cat? Cant love me!”

Uncertain if you are talking about ICF’s also but part of our interview process is that all potential employees spend time with the individuals during a meal.
This allows us to see their interaction and at the same give them an opportunity to see what the job may entail.

Great question Lisa….. looking forward to the responses. I would add an additional question if they provide any accommodations to support and if so, what are they? Assistive Technology? Etc.…

Subject: Questions about interviewing potential employees
Hello OPRA Members,
Question from a provider: Are any of you including the individuals you support in the interview process when hiring their staff? If so, what are the pros and cons of doing so?
Thanks!
Lisa
