I believe we have a n opportunity to assist in solving parts of the ‘workforce/caregiver crisis’.
Recent discussions with The ARC has indicated they would not oppose removing the GED nor age requirements. This is more about expanding the workforce pool to assist in hiring more DSPs and engaging younger potential staff members into our field
as a career.
I also think it sends a message that individuals with disabilities have more of an opportunity to participate as DSPs by removing the GED requirement. Hopefully through use of technology we can equip individuals with disabilities with assistance
that leads to them being successful DSPs therefore provide meaningful work opportunities to assist in solving the high unemployment rates of individuals with disabilities. A ‘win win’.
