We have been getting inquires about a recent memo instructing nurses to note all med errors in MAIS. This was drafted by a county board and approved by DODD. This is the department’s position, however we do not believe that this position is in concert with the rule. To that end, we (OPRA and OACB) are requesting a meeting with DODD to discuss. The email below was sent to county boards this morning. Please let me know if you are being asked to comply with this memo. We will send out more information as it becomes available.

Good morning. Since the release of this document there has ben a fury of emails and calls to DODD about the actual implications of implementing this process. I spoke with Janet Winterstein yesterday at length as many providers do not believe that the rules are crystal clear on this requirement. OACB and OPRA along with several of our members will be meeting in February with DODD staff to discuss and clarify the actual rule requirements as it seems somewhat open to interpretation.

I would ask you to put the brakes on sharing or enforcing this information in the meantime to allow us to work with DODD leadership on this issue. Thanks so much!

You’re welcome Cheryl.

This is the final document, I did not change the title prior to sending it out, my apologies.   I worked with Janet Winterstein to create this as a way to get the information out to my providers.

I had the same interpretation as you did prior to speaking with Janet and going over everything.

Thank you for bringing this up and spreading the word.  Here are some questions/notes/suggestions.  I’m not sure I’m interpreting the rule citation provided the same as DODD.  I don’t read this as a notation every time there is a med error, I read it as notations are made when the agency prohibits a staff person from passing meds…  I’ll be interested to see the final doc.

Hi All-

Up until recently, I was not aware that when a DD personnel with a medication administration certificate makes a med error, that it needs to be notated on their certificate. When I presented that information to my providers at a recent meeting, neither were they.

I worked with Janet Winterstein at DODD to create the attached informational document regarding Medication Error Notations and MAIS and wanted to share it with all of you as well.

Have a great day!

-Samantha
