Great question!  We use that tactic when someone buys a large ticket, such as a season pass to the zoo, water park,  or gym membership.  They always allow us to send staff for free by giving us a special pass for caregivers.  But I have never tried it for theatres or events.  We pay for staff so that would save us money.  We have tried it with amusement parks and it didn’t fly.  I should go back and try again.  It really is a legitimate request.  Has anyone else tried it?

HI All, This is a wonderful discussion!

As spin off topic, is there any value in assisting individuals to advocate for themselves, or when applicable, staff advocating for them, by explaining to local theaters, sports events, concerts, etc.,  that staff is an accommodation for the individuals disability and therefore should be able to attend the event with the person with a disability without paying admittance?

I see ADA written all over this one.

Hi everyone

I think giving a present is different than buying a ticket to a movie. If my clients want or require staff to be with them during a movie or event, then they must pay for the ticket. They are paid so little as it is.Buying food out is another story. Clients don't usually pay for dinners out. When any of my clients want to buy me something out, I tell them that they can buy me a cup of coffee. They feel like they are helping because they know I am only eating out because of them, but it is not costly for them.

I agree that accepting present should be banned in a facility setting but banning presents in an one on one HPC setting seems almost unnatural. Those of us who provide HPC often times get close to our clients and sometimes are considered almost family. During the day, I work in nursing home administration and the no present policy is very appropriate but somehow it feels wrong to refuse a small present from my HPC clients.  Both big and small must to adhere to Medicaid rules but the two types of businesses can be in reality two different animals.

Thanks for the discussion.

Hey Everyone!

With it being the holiday season, people are giving gifts. What are your policies if people you serve give presents to DSP's? My understanding is that they cannot take the gifts... if anyone has anything wrote up or has any training on how to say no to these appropriately, I would appreciate it :)

If anyone has any other thoughts on accepting the gifts, I would appreciate that too...
