Yeah Mike thanks for the attention to this....
This lap top has 3 ports and they quit working in turn over a period of
several weeks. I'm familiar with what you are suggesting but this was
different. At the point none of them worked I did take it into the shop and
he confirmed with a somber tone that it is the ports and it is a motherboard
problem. Then we even tried to install one of those USB cards but that port
was damaged too. Guess after nearly five years its just had all it will
take. The worst part is of course is I've had to relearn the skill of using
that darn touch pad which has its own hypersensitivity and quirks. And of
course going back to CD's for back ups and sharing instead of the handy
dandy flash drive.
I'm wayyyy down on our replacement list...so I'm serious if anyone has a
private/public sector source for donated computers when they cycle theirs
out. On our budget the cycle is a real stretch. And Nothing is cycled
completely out here. It has to explode for that to happen *LOL.

Dave,
Are you sure the USB ports are bad? USB ports are tough and will take a lot
of abuse. Sometimes unplugging a device without first turning off the port
causes the PC not to recognize the device the next time that you plug it in
and appears the port is not working. Just a thought.

Top OF the list is my laptop's USB ports have all gone sour (anyone got an
old one they are ready to donate???...and there's that one computer that
can't seem to find any printers on the network.
