Jamie, when is the Policy Committee planning to vet and make a motion? Is this the only firm we are entertaining? I don't want to be a pain but my board usually insists that I obtain three proposals/quotes for such an effort. However, as Jeff said, I understand that this is an appealing option based on personal connection and level of attention. Being fully transparent, I vetted this firm with one of my board members, Matt Cox, who is a lobbyist in Columbus and has a 13-year-old boy with severe disabilities who UCP has served for 10 years. To my surprise, he commented that his company, Capitol Partners, does much the same work as the firm Jeff as spoken with. http://capitolpartnersohio.com/ Matt and I are going to talk sometime this week. In short, he did not commit anything but commented that he could offer the same at a lower cost to OPRA. Jeff, please offer you honest opinion of Matt Cox and/or his firm. Again, I don't want to make more work for you but, if Capitol Partners is a legitimate option, the Policy Committee may want to compare. Matt would, of course, need to submit a proposal. To have a reasonable chance for a positive result, we will need as much ‘push’ from not only this firm, but from our partner associations. When I think what the energy firms spent to reduce their tax liability from fracking or in another administration ago, what the wind companies spent to get the attention of Governor’s office and legislature, this is a small sum. This is going to be a big uphill climb and we need maximum effort around the Capital Square. The key to me at least was their capacity to assist and their willingness to assist. Many firms will place us with 2nd and 3rd tier staff. In this case we would be working directly with the CEO because of their structure and personal interest in the cause. But we can chat in depth! 🤓 Sent from my iPhone On Oct 29, 2018, at 5:08 PM, Dennis <dgrant@ursdayton.org<mailto:dgrant@ursdayton.org>> wrote: I’ve only seen a couple of replies and although I am comfortable with this, $40,000 is a chunk of money so was wondering if there is any comment from our Treasurer about this being within our means/budget? Also, do we need a more formal voting process? Just thinking out loud..... In making this recommendation to you I was looking for a firm with a proven reputation and historical success but also one that has the capacity and desire to work with us. I have known and watched Michael Hartley for a number of years and can attest to the seriousness and the strategic brilliance with which he undertakes his projects. In our case I think it worth mentioning that Mike has a child with Autism and he has been very politically and socially active on behalf of that cause. He is very interested in working with us and would bring the passion necessary in undertaking something of this magnitude. The cost of their services is a retainer of $5000 a month through June 30th of 2019. Ideally I would like to start November 1st or as close to it as possible. But this is ultimately your decision and I will follow your lead. If you wish we can set up a conference call with Mike to discuss this in detail, including how we would begin going about our task. Or please feel free to call me and we can talk in all the detail you wish. Most certainly, I would think, we should set out a session at our Board retreat for whomever we hire to discuss all aspects of our approach. I look forward to talking with you as I am quite excited to see what we can accomplish!
