We have had this policy, however, our experience has been that if we hold staff financially accountable, they will go to great lengths to hide any damage they have caused. There are quite a few factors to navigate in holding the employee financially responsible for damage (including but not limited to… whether they are exempt or non-exempt, whether the payments effectively put them below minimum wage, and whether there was a signed agreement in place in advance of the accident). Prior to implementing a policy like this, you may want to have it reviewed by an attorney to ensure that it doesn’t cause any problems with wage and hour. That being said, there is always the option of addressing performance via disciplinary action if some of your staff are not taking appropriate caution or care with agency property. Hope this helps!
